When the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) wanted to migrate its flagship transport application to a modern platform, it engaged, Intelematics, the leading Australian technology company in the mobility data space.

As an organisation, RACV supports Victorians having a choice to get around using different mobility options.

In 2018, RACV embarked on a new project: a mobile app called ‘arevo that offered Victorian commuters the ability to view different transport modes and options to get them to their destination in the way that best suited their circumstances.

“RACV wanted to explore new ways to connect with the Victorian commuting public and realised we could do this by providing a service that helped them to choose a transport option that matched their travel requirements per trip, rather than be fixed to one mode,” said Elizabeth Kim, GM arevo Mobility at RACV and the lead for this project.

While arevo launched with great success in 2019, the company wanted to find a way to further integrate the app within the RACV eco-system as well as tailor it to incorporate the initial user feedback.

“RACV has invested heavily in back-end IT systems that better serve our members, and arevo needed to be part of that.”

“We also received a lot of feedback from arevo users expressing their desire to have more mobility information available at their fingertips. This included parking, fuel information and bike paths.” Said Ms Kim.

At the same time, Australia’s premier technology company, Intelematics, was expanding into the managed services industry by coupling its transport expertise and data capability with wider mobility technology.

“Intelematics’ new capabilities made them perfect in helping us redevelop arevo, by keeping what RACV members loved, but better integrating it with the RACV eco-system and making it more user-friendly,” Ms Kim said.

“Intelematics knows mobility data like no one else,” states Intelematics CEO, Nick Marks. “We have over two decades of experience in collating and utilising complex mobility data to provide live navigation services and valuable insights into mobility usage.”

“We have built dashboard apps for vehicle manufacturers with key user-experience capabilities. The development process allowed us to learn what customers want and expect in transport apps,” said Mr Marks.

Intelematics’ new agile way of working – a business-wide transformation that started in 2019 and sped up through COVID-19, allowed the company to apply a dynamic lens to the project.

“arevo needed to be incredibly flexible and dynamic, as we are talking about an app where data is updated in real-time and adapts to the users’ environment.”

“Our agile way of working allows us to respond to an evolving customer base more quickly as the app continually updates to match the customer’s needs,” said Mr Marks.

The new arevo app features not only transport data that is up to date but live public transport disruption details, parking information and petrol prices.

Elizabeth Kim said Intelematics has done a brilliant job of putting together complex data inputs in a way that its members can easily interpret and use.

“A lot of configuration needed to be done. There was a complex routing that Intelematics had to tweak. This was not something any other provider could do at the scale we needed.”

“Intelematics was great at taking our business requirements and making a product that can add significant value to our users’ lives. It was a great experience working with them,” Ms Kim said.
